Import Export Code (IEC): How to Apply and Why Every Exporter Needs One

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce. It is the first and most fundamental requirement for anyone wishing to import or export goods or services from India.

How to Apply for IEC Online

Register on DGFT Portal
Visit dgft.gov.in → Create an account using your PAN and email. Verify via OTP.

Apply for New IEC
Go to Services → IEC → Apply for IEC. Your PAN-based details are auto-fetched from the income tax database.

Fill the ANF 2A Form
Enter business details, bank account information, and branch/unit details. Upload required documents.

Pay the Fee — ₹500
Government fee of ₹500 payable online via net banking/UPI/card through the DGFT portal.

Receive IEC Certificate
IEC is typically issued within 1–2 working days and can be downloaded directly from the DGFT portal.
⚠️ Annual Update Mandatory

From April 2021, IEC holders must update/confirm their IEC details on the DGFT portal between April and June every year. Failure to update within this window leads to automatic deactivation of the IEC code.
