Udyam Registration (previously known as Udyog Aadhaar) is the official MSME registration process introduced by the Ministry of MSME in 2020. It classifies businesses as Micro, Small, or Medium enterprises based on investment and turnover — and unlocks a vast range of government benefits.

  • Government tender preference — 25% of all public procurement reserved for MSMEs
  • Subsidy on patent/trademark fees — 50% rebate
  • Electricity tariff concessions in many states

How to Register on Udyam Portal

1
Visit udyamregistration.gov.in
The portal is fully self-service. Registration is free — be wary of third-party sites charging high fees for this.
2
Enter Aadhaar and Validate
For proprietors, use personal Aadhaar. For companies/LLPs, use the authorised signatory's Aadhaar. Validate via OTP.
3
Enter PAN and Business Details
PAN data and ITR/GST data are auto-populated. Enter investment and turnover figures honestly.
4
Submit and Download Certificate
Udyam Registration Certificate is issued instantly. It has a QR code for verification and a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN).
💡 No Renewal Required

Unlike the old Udyog Aadhaar, Udyam Registration has lifetime validity with no renewal. However, if your turnover or investment crosses the MSME threshold, you must update your classification on the portal. Failing to update can lead to loss of MSME benefits.

If your business qualifies as an MSME and you haven't registered on Udyam yet, you are leaving significant benefits on the table. The registration is free, instant, and opens the door to government schemes worth lakhs. Legal Chanakya assists businesses with Udyam registration and identifying the right government schemes to apply for next.
